Patios & Hardscapes in North-Central West Virginia

Ground-level living space built to handle West Virginia freeze-thaw — pavers and natural stone on a proper compacted base.

A patio is ground-level living space — no stairs, no railings, no height restrictions. Just solid, level stone or pavers that handle West Virginia weather and look good doing it. Title Construction builds patios, walkways, fire pit areas, and sitting walls in Morgantown, Clarksburg, Bridgeport, and Fairmont, in pavers and natural stone.

Hardscaping is unforgiving work. A patio that isn't excavated deep enough, compacted properly, and pitched for drainage will heave, settle, and hold water within a few freeze-thaw cycles. Every patio should be built on a compacted aggregate base with proper edge restraint and drainage pitch — because a patio that shifts in two years isn't a bargain at any price.

How the Process Works

1. On-site consultation. Look at the area where the patio will go: grade, soil, drainage patterns, and how water currently moves across the yard. Talk about size, shape, and how you'll use it — dining set, fire pit, hot tub, or just a clean transition from the back door to the yard.

2. 3D rendering. Every Title Construction consultation includes a free 3D rendering. Patios are about proportion — too small and the furniture crowds the edges, too big and it dominates the yard. The rendering shows the patio in scale with your house and yard, with the pattern and color of the pavers or stone you'll actually get.

3. Material selection. Pavers or natural stone, and the specific pattern and color. Ask to see real samples — photos don't capture how stone looks in actual daylight. Everything should be ordered before work breaks ground.

4. Build. Proper site excavation to the right base depth, compacted aggregate base, bedding layer, paver or stone installation, polymeric sand joints, edge restraint, and final grading. Expect lawn protection during the work and complete cleanup when it's done.

What's Included in a Typical Patio & Hardscape Project

  • Site excavation to proper depth for the base (not just scraping the grass off)
  • Compacted crushed-aggregate base, typically 4–6 inches
  • Bedding layer screeded level with correct drainage pitch away from the house
  • Concrete pavers or natural stone in your chosen pattern and color
  • Polymeric sand joints to lock pavers and resist weeds and ants
  • Edge restraint to keep the patio from spreading over time
  • Grading and drainage so water runs away from the patio and the house
  • Cleanup and lawn repair along the work area

Common additions: walkways connecting the patio to the driveway or front of the house, sitting walls, fire pit kits, step installations for sloped yards, and landscape lighting.

Planning Your Timeline

Timelines vary with size and complexity — a straightforward smaller paver patio moves faster than a large patio with sitting walls, fire pits, walkways, or significant grading. Natural stone takes longer than pavers because every piece is cut and fit by hand.

Weather matters more for hardscaping than for interior work — heavy rain turns an excavation into mud, and pavers shouldn't be laid on a saturated base. Your contractor should give you an honest start date based on the forecast, not just the calendar.
